Custom LASIK - Wavefront Technology

Patients often get confused regarding the topic of wavefront technology also commonly called Custom LASIK. We often get confused because each excimer laser manufacturer has their own branded version of this NEW wavefront technology. We will aim to explain all of these brands and discuss the general scientific premise of wavefront technology and custom LASIK. Wavefront technology is the scientific principle for Customized LASIK, currently being performed across the world today. Wavefront Technology has drastically improved the visual outcomes of many patients and provided significant advantages over conventional LASIK.

So what exactly is wavefront technology? Wavefront technology is a method of analyzing or measuring optical imperfections also known as aberrations. Aberrations can diminish the quality of your vision. Analyzing these distortions or imperfections is different than just correcting a refractive error, it deals with the actual unique visual needs aside from refractive error. The current wavefront systems work by measuring how light is distorted as it passes into the eye and then is reflected back. An optical map of the eye is then created detailing the unique visual imperfections. This map is then used in a wavefront treatment.

The wavefront technology treatment actually converts wavefront information into a laser pattern that is then used to correct higher order aberrations. With this new technology readily available across the country doctors can now customize LASIK for individual patient needs. These treatments are unique to everyone's eyes. The wavefront mapping is just as unique as a snowflake or fingerprint.

Wavefront Technology Origins

Wavefront technology actually was started for work related to the hubble telescope. To perform maintenance on the Hubble telescope NASA space engineers needed a new way to analyze the visual information. The scientist developed wavefront technology, a method to examine the visual information one pixel at a time.

Reasons You May Choose to Consider Custom LASIK

  1. FDA studies show very good results (In the VISX FDA trials 98% of wavefront LASIK patients were able to see 20/20 or better)
  2. If you are very meticulous, especially about focusing or your vision and always seek the sharpest image you should consider this type of LASIK treatment.
  3. Reduction of glare and haloes. If night driving is already difficult then consider that treating the aberrations may help this aspect of your vision.
  4. Wavefront technology is the most advanced method of LASIK vision correction.

Clinical Study Results

VISX's FDA clinical study results were very good. One year after the VISX CustomVue procedure:

  • 70% of the clinical study participants could see 20/16 or better without glasses or contacts
  • 100% of the clinical study participants could pass a driving test without glasses or contacts
  • 98% of the clinical study participants could see 20/20 or better without glasses or contacts
